Wounded Warriors Spouse Support — support group for wounded warrior spouses

What is Wounded Warriors Spouse Support?

Wounded Warriors Spouse Support (WWSS) is a support group open to male and female spouses of wounded service members from all locations:

  • Warrior Transition Battalion
  • Madigan Army Medical Center
  • All units
  • All bases

Monthly groups cover events and educational topics that help wounded warrior spouses with their unique life circumstances. Group meetings include free childcare, refreshments, and door prizes. It’s also an opportunity for Heartbeat and our donors to pamper those who sacrifice daily for us. Group activities vary:

  • Speakers on nutrition, PTSD, and other topics
  • Neck massages by licensed massage therapists
  • Discussions about family concerns and resources
  • Special events
  • Evening get-togethers
  • Christmas dinner with gifts
  • Gift certificates for spa, restaurants, and family events

Spouses who have newborns will each receive a Baby Love Baby Bundle at the meeting. The bundle contains a homemade baby quilt by Project Linus and a new baby outfit. To receive the gift, please contact Aimee Spharler.

Why does Heartbeat have a spouses’ group?

The military takes care of some health care needs, but the spouse is the primary caregiver — a critical role in the warrior’s return to a stable, healthy, productive life. Heartbeat’s support group helps spouses to “soldier on” during challenges few of us experience.

Spouses face a maze of civilian and military roadblocks when caring for a wounded warrior. It’s an uphill battle at times.

Many WWSS members report how valuable a safe, positive support network is, especially for those who experience their extraordinary challenges. Only a wounded warrior spouse knows what it’s like.
